Noise is undoubtedly one of the nuisances likely to affect the quality of life at work.

In some cases, noise is emitted by machines, production lines (in many sectors of activity); in other cases the noise emissions are due to related equipment e.g. dedusting network, chips suction mouths (especially in the paper and cardboard processing industry), ventilation systems.

Regardless of the sources of noise involved, there is a need to ensure that the levels of daily noise exposure of workers (operators, specialized and non-specialized workers, machine operators, supervisory personnel, fork-lift truckers) are below 80 dB(A) and/or for the peak sound pressure level to remain below 135 dB(C), since these values constitute the double limit that triggers the action within the meaning of Decree No. 2006-892 of July 2006 the 19 th on the safety and health requirements applicable in the event of exposure of workers to the risks arising from noise and amending the Labor Code which transposes Directive 2003/10 / EC into French law.

Frequently, it is not only the maintenance of acceptable working conditions (e.g. in terms of the habitability of the production premises) but also the possibility of maintaining oral communications between colleagues and a perception of alarm or vehicles circulation signals.in good time: none of this is possible without a minimum of intelligibility of such sounds that must be able to emerge, what requires an ambient noise level sufficiently low and a minimum control of the reverberation phenomena.

Depending on the case, a noise reduction at the source (e.g. by means of enclosures, soundproof canopies, absorptive casings, silencers), or a limitation of the propagation of the noise (e.g. by means of screens with high acoustic absorption, soundproofed cabins to protect personnel), or an acoustic correction of the room (by the implementation of absorbent materials on the walls and/or under-roof) should be considered (it is not uncommon to have to combine several actions to improve an acoustic situation to take into account the specificities of a soundproofing project and its ordinary constraints).

In the case of collective offices or of open-spaces offices (open-plan offices), the noise levels encountered are generally below values that can generate auditory trauma: the main objective is to ensure that there is no discomfort between the workstations, which are often close to each other, while allowing comfort for conversations (which are often done at short distances): a minimum working comfort is required to be able to validly perform administrative tasks or other tasks requiring a (still) higher level of concentration (e.g. analysis, design and engineering works, research and development).

The acoustic performance of the workspace in terms of overall sound level (including: external noise and equipment noise), in terms of reverberation time and in terms of spatial sound decay, such as arising notably from the presence or suspended suspended ceilings, sound-absorbing wall coverings, suspended or screen-mounted absorbing elements (which in addition oppose the propagation of noise) are crucial for the assessment, by their occupants, of the acoustic quality of such premises; this is also valid for other company premises such as meeting/training rooms and relaxation areas (and also canteens which must also be the subject of special attention).

In all situations where complaints have been registered, ITS can carry out an on-site diagnosis and provide personalized support for search and development of solutions for acoustic improvement, so that noise is taken account appropriately in actions to improve the quality of life at work.

ITS will participate as an exhibitor at the Preventica exhibition (health/safety at work) on May 2018 the 29th, 30th, 31st in Lyon (Auvergne Rhône Alpes region, France): stand A67 will be the place to be to know more about the technologies and services offered by ITS in the field of noise control (measurements, studies and works for industrial soundproofing and acoustic insulation/comfort of buildings).
