When one is looking to protect persons (from noise) by the means of a structure envelopping a noise source (machine), designed for protecting the environment from this noise source (machine), ITS offers a wide range of devices for acoustic nuisance limitation in industrial working premises / buildings for many applications of soundprrofing / acoustic insulation related to the protection of workers against noise.

The noise level ouside of such soundproofing devices is generally well below the lower values of exposure of workers to noise trigging action: a sound pressure level below 75 dBA can be obtained in numerous ordinary cases, offering in any cases to workers (including: operators of very noisy machinery) the protection against auditory trauma necessary for the performance of their tasks.

They are usually made of coated metallic soundprrofing panels with an insulation made of mineral fiber (walls, roof and if needed: floor) and equipped with painted metallic acoustic doors (rotating or sliding) and of acoustic windows with safety glass. Some of those construction elements may have a sound reduction index Rw that can reach 52 dB as a standard (a higher performance can be obtained by the means of special constructions).

The devices for acoustic nuisance limitation in industrial work premises / buildings for the protection of workers marketed by ITS may be of variable geometry:

  • when it comes to reducing the noise closer to a machine, an envelopping protection is envisaged: according to the language habits, one speaks then (*) of carterization, of canopy, of hood, of enclosure
  • when it comes to implementing a separation between a space where the noise is confined, and another space where it is desired to obtain lower ambient sound levels: then one speaks (*) (e.g. between floor and ceiling) of partition, wall or (if the height of the construction is lower than that of the ceiling or under-roof, or if there is no ceiling or under-roof) screen, partition, claustra, divider

* according to the language habits of this one or that one, with expressions that are more or less academic, to which it is sometimes used to add (to insist on the functionality that is expected) an adjective: sound-absorbing, acoustic, isophonic or a locution: sound-absorbing, noise-canceling, noise-reducing

Apart from the implementation of such devices, all of which oppose the propagation of noise, the acoustic nuisance in industrial working premises can be combated by using sound absorbing materials, distributed on the walls or ceiling / under-roof and sometimes in the form of suspended elements (baffles): it is called acoustic correction, or acoustic treatment; this is to limit the reverberation (of the noise), which in practice is measured by means of an indicator called reverberation time or reverberation duration (variable with the frequency and, usually: expressed in seconds) to which are connected (not always by simple formulations, reliably applicable to all contexts and simple to use) the decrease of the sound level by doubling of distance to the source and the amplification of the sound pressure level compared to the free acoustic field.
