Noise nuisances are too often present in our daily lives and must be combated because they generate discomfort, fatigue, stress and can cause significant and sometimes irreversible health problems.

Contexts in which noise nuisances should be the subject of prevention, diagnosis and treatment

Noise at work is a nuisance to which particular attention must be paid, firstly because in relation to a significant noise exposure cumulative duration - in France, the effective working time of 1607 hours per year (i.e. 35 hours per week) is the reference for working time - and, secondly, because in relation to potentially very high noise levels, e.g. if they exceed the lower exposure values that trigger preventive action as laid down by Decree No 2006-892 of 19 July 2006 in Article R. 231-131 paragraph I item 1, Article R. 231-133 and the Article R. 231-134, paragraph II, i.e. a daily noise exposure level of 80 dB (A) or a peak sound pressure level of 135 dB (C). Soundproofing equipment for noise reduction of production machinery and equipment can be useful in such contexts.

Noise disturbance in homes must also be limited, whether it comes from transport infrastructure (road, rail), whether it is related to air transport, or to other human activities e.g. industrial. Because nothing better to relax than a home where we are protected from noise ! Materials and construction systems performing in terms of sound insulation may be required to limit the transmission of sound from the outside, or from an adjoining dwelling, in the same building, e.g. if it is home to noisy activities (even craft).

Noise in leisure areas (bars, restaurants, sports halls) and more generally in public access buildings (PAB) must be tackled (what is sometimes difficult, if started late) to prevent nuisances and offer the conditions of acoustic comfort without which such spaces lose much of their attractiveness when not simply their habitability.

Can we imagine that we taste with pleasure several times the most refined cuisine that is in a place whose acoustics are not up to par e.g. because of the lack of sound absorbing materials, only likely to avoid the unbearable sound escalation related to the phenomenon of excessive reverberation ?

Can we imagine our long stay in a hotel room with the most beautiful view (according to the tastes: on a majestic gulf or on an enchanting valley in a land of milk and honey) while hearing noises as unwanted as those related to the snapping of doors, walking and trampling (e.g. in the room above), traffic, the use of bathroom equipment, etc. ?

Can we imagine profitably carried out the learning designed (sometimes: with dedication) to be the most rewarding or the most exciting or even the most necessary learning (such as those targeted by the National Education, then the Universities and then the Vocational Training) in classrooms, meeting rooms, or training rooms with poor intelligibility due to the lack of implementation of soundproofing devices ?

Can we imagine lasting listening to the most accomplished melodies, based on the most sophisticated chords (or arpeggios), carrying the most poetic texts, with the best vocal or instrumental effects in a place being too reverberant, which will be subject to the horrible Larsen effect or even (only) to a frequency imbalance denaturing the work whose music is amplified in a place that is not appropriate to not say unworthy ?

No ! Four times no !
